Massive transfusion (≥10 units of blood within 24 hours) is required in 1% to 3% of civilian trauma patients. In a retrospective study, researchers assessed the effect of the ratio of apheresis platelets per stored red blood cell unit (aPLT:RBC) on survival in U.S. military personnel who were injured in Iraq between 2004 and 2006. Among 8618 trauma patients, 464 (5.4%) received massive transfusions that included platelets obtained by apheresis. Patients who had been treated before transfer to the single receiving hospital or who had received whole blood (i.e., containing platelets) were excluded.
