Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) was discovered less than 15 years ago and is now a major cause of skin infections in emergency department patients throughout the U.S. (JW Emerg Med Sep 8 2006 and JW Emerg Med Mar 28 2008). Staphylococcal pneumonia is a known, although infrequent, complication of influenza. Reports of CA-MRSA as a complication of influenza have been published, but data on the frequency of this complication among all influenza cases are lacking.
