Teenage drivers (age range, 16–20 years) have the highest crash rate per mile driven among all age groups and are less likely to use seat belts than younger children and adults. A campaign to increase seat belt use among teenagers was developed and implemented at 11 high schools in Colorado in 2007. The 7-week campaign — the Teen Traffic Safety Challenge — involved teaching resources, student activities, and incentives for increased seat belt use, with a grand prize for the winning school. Seat belt use was determined during two or more unannounced observations.
