In 2006, in the U.S., 900 fatalities and 144,000 injuries were attributed to motor vehicle collisions caused by running red lights. Installation of cameras at intersections to photograph vehicles running red lights affords continuous presence, consistent detection, and greater safety than enforcement by police officers. In a prospective observational study, investigators evaluated the number of violations and collisions after installation of a red light camera at an intersection in Louisiana in 2007. The intersection had the ninth-highest rate of motor vehicle collisions in the U.S.
