Canadian investigators retrospectively assessed the frequency of medical encounters 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks before diagnosis of diabetes in children younger than 18 years in Ontario from 1994 to 2000. Frequency of medical visits in children with diabetes was compared with that in age- and sex-matched children in two control groups — one from the general population and one from a population with asthma.
The investigators identified 3947 new cases of diabetes, including 735 cases (19%) with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Children with newly diagnosed diabetes had significantly more medical visits than children in either control group, with the exception of patients with asthma at 4 weeks.
