In a prospective cohort study of infants (age, <12 months) who presented to a pediatric emergency department (ED) in Wisconsin with first-time bronchiolitis from November 2007 through March 2008, investigators sought to characterize duration of illness and caregiver burden. Patients were excluded for previous reactive airway disease, treatment with corticosteroids in the preceding 14 days, immunocompromised state, concomitant diagnosis of croup or pneumonia, or non-English-speaking primary caregiver. Time to resolution of illness, defined as absence of cough for 24 hours, was assessed via weekly telephone interviews.
