As the prevalence of life-threatening allergic reactions has risen, so has the use of epinephrine autoinjectors. Reported untoward outcomes from accidental digital epinephrine injection and recommended therapies for it vary and are based on case reports. In this retrospective study, researchers reviewed 213 accidental digital epinephrine autoinjections that were reported to six poison control centers in Texas during 6 years.
Of the 127 cases with follow-up, 114 (90%) reported some symptoms (pain, blanching, discoloration, numbness, ecchymosis, ischemia, and decreased capillary refill), which lasted less than 2 hours in most people (58%) and completely resolved without any sequelae in all.
