In a retrospective chart review of 163 children younger than 12 years (mean, 5.7 years) who presented to an Atlanta pediatric emergency department for alleged sexual assault during a 2-year period, investigators evaluated the performance characteristics of a four-question screening tool for identifying need for emergent evaluation.
Overall, 90 patients (55%) had positive screens — yes answers to any of the following four questions: (1) Did the incident occur during the last 72 hours, and was there oral contact or genital–genital or genital–anal contact?
