To study the prevalence of and risk factors for nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) in children, researchers reviewed records for 75 patients (age range, 3 months to 21 years; mean, 7.8 years) who were referred for urgent electroencephalography (EEG) to evaluate for NCSE at an academic children's hospital. Eighteen patients were identified retrospectively from 2005 to 2010, and 57 were enrolled prospectively when inpatient EEG was requested from 2010 to 2011. Indications for referral included NCSE, altered mental status, unresponsiveness, subclinical seizures, and evaluation for status epilepticus. Of the prospectively enrolled inpatients, 56% were referred from outside the intensive care unit (ICU).
