To describe helmet use in fatal motorcycle accidents, these authors reviewed data from 2008 to 2010 on traffic crashes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
In 2010, the 4502 motorcycle crash fatalities comprised 14% of all road deaths, even though motorcycles accounted for only 1% of all vehicle miles traveled. Fatally injured motorcycle riders were more likely to have been riding without a helmet in states with no or partial helmet laws than in those with helmet laws (79% and 64% vs. 12%). Costs saved (medical costs and productivity losses) from helmet use were approximately $1.2 million per fatality, $172,000 per serious injury, and $7,500 per minor injury. Costs per registered motor…
