Traumatic brain injuries are among the most common skiing and snowboarding injuries, and there is robust evidence demonstrating that helmet use substantially decreases their incidence and severity. Investigators used observation and interviews to describe helmet use at three Canadian ski resorts.
Among 3336 people observed, helmet use was similar for skiers and snowboarders (74% and 72%, respectively) and was higher among females than males (80% vs. 70%). Helmet use was inversely proportional to age, and was highest in children between the ages of 4 and 12 years. Children were more likely to wear a helmet if their guardian was wearing one.
