The FDA has approved Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate) for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, according to an announcement from the manufacturer.
The company says that Vyvanse (a pharmacologically inactive prodrug comprised of d-amphetamine covalently bonded to l-lysine) has a lower potential for abuse than other ADHD treatments. Side effects are similar to those of other amphetamines.
The FDA has proposed that Vyvanse be classified as a Schedule II controlled substance. The manufacturer expects to launch the drug in the second quarter of this year for once-daily dosing in 30, 50, and 70 mg strengths.
