In the absence of thromboprophylaxis, the incidence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) ranges from 10% to 40% after general surgery. However, we have little information about the incidence of DVT when adequate thromboprophylaxis is provided.
Researchers retrospectively analyzed information on 2189 general surgery patients from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database at a single tertiary care hospital from 2008 through 2010; all patients received DVT prophylaxis. A total of 35 patients (1.6%) developed DVT (94% symptomatic) postoperatively.
