Inpatient hyperglycemia is associated with adverse patient outcomes. However, recent trials in critically ill patients have highlighted that strict glucose control leads to excess hypoglycemia and can be associated with mortality. Even less is known about optimal glucose targets and insulin dosing regimens in noncritically ill hospitalized patients.
Researchers in Boston performed a single-center retrospective chart review of nearly 2000 noncritically ill hospitalized diabetic patients. Those with episodes of hypoglycemia (glucose level, ≤70 mg/dL) that occurred 24 hours or later after admission were matched to nonhypoglycemic control patients.
