In an effort to continually advance the practice of medicine by molding the education of future practicing clinicians, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) introduced its Next Accreditation System (NAS) in a recent special report. The system aims to (1) enhance peer review to prepare physicians for practice in an environment that must incorporate patient-centered team-based care, health information technology, and comparative effectiveness; and (2) move toward accreditation based on educational outcomes rather than simply program structure and process-based outcomes.
