Observational studies suggest that statin use is associated with lower incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) after cardiac surgery. Investigators retrospectively examined this association further among nearly 80,000 patients who had undergone major surgery (abdominal, cardiac, vascular, thoracic) within 3 days of hospitalization. Patients were considered statin users if these medications were administered in the hospital prior to surgery. Statin users were matched to nonstatin users by type of surgery, baseline renal function, and propensity scores that included comorbidities and other medications.
