Nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) of the liver is characterized pathologically by diffuse regenerative nodules without significant fibrosis and is associated clinically with the signs and symptoms of portal hypertension. The etiology of this condition is unknown; some evidence suggests a primary vasculopathy with alterations in blood flow to the liver. Although NRH has been associated with a variety of conditions, including vascular, rheumatologic, and hematologic disorders and drug toxicity, its association with HIV infection has not been defined. Now, investigators in France have described the clinical and histologic features of eight HIV-infected patients with NRH.
