Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the value of antibiotic monotherapy for appendicitis with perforation. For children with this condition, how does β-lactam monotherapy compare with aminoglycoside-based triple-antibiotic therapy (ABT) with regard to readmissions, late complications, and length of stay? To find out, researchers reviewed antibiotic-treatment trends and correlated antibiotic regimens with outcomes. Using a database that includes information from 32 children’s hospitals in the U.S., they found records for 8545 children (through 18 years of age) admitted from March 1, 1999, through September 30, 2004, for treatment of ruptured appendicitis.
