Current guidelines for treating drug-susceptible TB recommend a 6-month rifamycin-based regimen, regardless of the patient’s HIV serostatus. Is 6 months long enough in HIV-infected patients?
To find out, researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study among 700 patients with culture-proven TB whose cases were reported to the San Francisco Tuberculosis Control Program from 1990 through 2001. Among these patients, 264 (38%) were known to be HIV-infected, and 315 (45%) were known to be uninfected; 121 (17%) had no risk factors for HIV and were not offered testing.
