The newer azoles have proven to be effective in neutropenic patients with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. However, other than surgical removal of an aspergilloma, we have no standard treatment for chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) in nonneutropenic patients. Now, researchers in France have retrospectively analyzed cases of CPA treated with voriconazole between November 2001 and May 2004. Inclusion criteria included chest-imaging findings compatible with CPA, a positive serologic test for aspergillus, detection of aspergillus in a bronchopulmonary specimen, and follow-up ≥6 months. Patients with a simple aspergilloma, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, or active lung infection were excluded.
