Fever is frequently a marker of serious illness in returned travelers. A traveler’s illness could be caused by common, globally distributed pathogens or by organisms endemic to the specific area(s) to which he or she has traveled.
Using data from 31 GeoSentinel sites on six continents, researchers assessed the frequency of fever as a main reason for seeking care, the causes of fever according to regions visited, the characteristics of ill travelers, and the interval from return to presentation. Records were available for 24,920 individuals who met inclusion criteria (e.g., care sought after travel, diagnoses confirmed or probable, travel not for immigration purposes).
