Chlamydia and gonorrhea — important causes of genital infection and of resultant pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy — are the most commonly reported nationally notifiable infections in the U.S. People aged 14 to 39 account for >90% of gonorrhea cases and >95% of chlamydia cases. To establish infection prevalence in various subgroups of this population, CDC researchers analyzed sexual history information and urine-testing results for 6632 individuals aged 14 to 39 who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2002.
