From 1950 through 2005, 405 botulism “events” (cases or outbreaks) were reported in the U.S. for which the implicated food item was identified; 92% of such events were related to home-canned foods. The last known outbreak from commercially processed food occurred in 1974.
In 2007, the CDC reported five cases of botulism caused by ingestion of commercially canned chili sauce. In four of the cases (2 siblings in Texas; a married couple in Indiana), onset occurred in late June or early July. The source was traced within 2 weeks to a Castleberry’s Food Company canning plant in Augusta, Georgia, where deficiencies in the canning process were identified.
