Doripenem: Doripenem, a new carbapenem antibiotic, received FDA approval in October 2007 for use in treating complicated intra-abdominal and urinary tract infections in adults. Its spectrum of activity is comparable to those of imipenem and meropenem. The normal dosage is 500 mg intravenously every 8 hours; adjustment is required for patients with moderately or severely impaired renal function.
Retapamulin: Retapamulin is the first pleuromutilin antibiotic to be approved by the FDA. It binds to a site on the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis.
