Given the rapid increase in cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection seen in the U.S., defining the magnitude of the problem is important. To explore this issue, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology conducted a survey of MRSA prevalence in U.S. healthcare facilities.
Infection control personnel at 1237 hospitals nationwide identified all patients known to be colonized or infected with MRSA in their respective institutions on a single day between October 1 and November 10, 2006.
