Candida infections are occurring with increasing frequency in hospitals. Vulnerability is particularly high in ICUs, where immunosuppression is common and use of invasive devices and antibiotics is widespread. Now, in a partially industry-supported, prospective, observational study, researchers have investigated current epidemiologic trends in Candida infections in critically ill patients. The study involved 8509 adults (representing 83,052 patient-days) admitted to any of 24 Paris ICUs from June 2001 through May 2002.
During this 1-year period, 233 patients developed candiduria (mean, 17.2 days after ICU admission) — an incidence of 27.4 per 1000 admissions, or 2.8 per 1000 patient-days. Women were affected significantly more often than men…
