Bacterial meningitis in adults is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Previous research has indicated that seizures in this setting are associated with poor outcome (Journal Watch Infectious Diseases Nov 22 2004). Now, investigators in the Netherlands have further assessed this association using data from a prospective, nationwide, observational study involving adults who contracted bacterial meningitis between October 1998 and April 2002 (696 episodes of culture-confirmed bacterial meningitis in 671 patients).
