During the past 15 years, the Hispanic population has grown substantially in San Diego County, California. At the same time, incidence of Mycobacterium bovis TB has increased in the region. Correct diagnosis is important because M. bovis is almost always resistant to pyrazinamide, necessitating 9 months of treatment rather than the 6 months that are standard for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections.
To identify trends in M. bovis disease, investigators conducted a retrospective analysis of TB cases in San Diego County from 1994 through 2005.
