Appropriate care of severe sepsis is highly complex, involving the rapid implementation of multiple diagnostic and therapeutic modalities by a team of healthcare providers. Consensus guidelines for management of severe sepsis were developed in 2001 and subsequently updated in 2004 and 2008 (JW Infect Dis Feb 6 2008). To determine whether widespread adoption of these guidelines would influence patient outcomes, investigators implemented and evaluated an educational program in 59 medical–surgical ICUs located throughout Spain.
