Candida species are a common cause of bloodstream infections (BSIs) in critically ill patients. Fluconazole, which is frequently used for treatment and prophylaxis of fungal infections, is more active against Candida albicans than against several non-albicans species. Distinguishing between the risk factors for albicans and for non-albicans BSIs might therefore help to guide prophylactic treatment.
To examine these risk factors, researchers performed a retrospective case-control study involving ICU patients at two Boston hospitals between 1995 and 2005.
