The burden of illness and death from malaria remains considerable, especially in Africa. Studies from two African countries provide longitudinal data about malaria transmission.
Ceesay and colleagues retrospectively analyzed malaria indices at five hospital sites in The Gambia (at 1 site, from 1999 through 2007; at 4 sites, from 2003 through 2007). All sites had laboratories with continuously monitored procedures and trained staff. At all five facilities, the proportions of ward admissions and deaths due to malaria decreased during the study period.
