Amphotericin products are the drugs of choice for the treatment of zygomycosis. Posaconazole has recently been studied as salvage therapy, with promising results (JW Infect Dis Feb 7 2006). Because of the high mortality rate associated with zygomycosis, interest in combination therapy has emerged, but supporting data are lacking. Now, in a study partially supported by industry, researchers have investigated the efficacy of posaconazole, liposomal amphotericin B (LAmB), or both in diabetic ketoacidotic and neutropenic mouse models of disseminated zygomycosis.
