Triazole antifungal agents are widely used for treating Aspergillus infections. Although triazole resistance among these molds is believed to be uncommon, it was recently observed at six hospitals in the Netherlands. To investigate the emergence and spread of such resistance, researchers analyzed clinical Aspergillus fumigatus isolates collected from 1219 patients at one medical center in the Netherlands between 1994 and 2007.
A. fumigatus isolates that grew on media containing 8 mg of itraconazole/L were first seen in June 2000 and occurred with increasing frequency thereafter (total, 32 isolates).
