Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a potentially devastating complication of HIV disease. Among HIV-associated cases of PML, up to 18% may be linked to immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). Systemic corticosteroids have been helpful in other IRIS-associated conditions. To determine whether steroid therapy might improve survival in patients with PML-IRIS, investigators conducted a retrospective analysis involving all patients with this condition who were evaluated at Johns Hopkins Hospital between April 2004 and October 2007 and similar patients who were reported in the literature between 1998 and 2007.
