Combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly improved the prognosis of HIV-infected patients. To investigate whether ICU admission diagnoses and survival have changed in the current ART era, researchers performed a retrospective cohort study of all HIV-infected adults admitted to the ICU at San Francisco General Hospital from 2000 through 2004.
Of 281 HIV-infected patients in 311 ICU admission episodes, 33% were on ART. ART users were significantly more likely than ART nonusers to have a history of HIV-associated opportunistic infection or malignancy.
