Candida glabrata is the second leading cause of candidemia in U.S. hospitals and is more likely than other common Candida species to be fluconazole resistant. Knowing the risk factors for fluconazole-resistant C. glabrata bloodstream infection (BSI) could help guide empirical therapy for patients with suspected candidemia. To examine such risk factors, researchers performed a case-control study that included all patients with healthcare-associated C. glabrata BSIs diagnosed at any of three University of Pennsylvania–affiliated hospitals from January 2003 through May 2007.
