New IDSA guidelines provide updated recommendations for treating patients who have or are at risk for Candida infections.

Key Points: This document, which replaces the guidelines published in 2004, explores 15 important questions in the management of Candida infections. Major changes from the previous guidelines include the following:

Echinocandins (caspofungin, anidulafungin, or micafungin) are now recommended for treating severe cases of candidemia, with fluconazole an alternative for more clinically stable patients.
Echinocandins are also recommended for treating Candida glabrata infections, unless azole susceptibility has been confirmed, and are the preferred empirical therapy for patients with recent azole exposure.
