Antibiotic treatment of asymptomatic catheter-associated bacteriuria in adults is generally not indicated, but clinical experience suggests that it frequently occurs.
To examine this issue, researchers reviewed the medical records of all patients at a large Veterans Affairs hospital between July and September 2007 who had urine cultures containing ≥104 colony-forming units/mL of any bacterium or yeast. A total of 280 episodes of either transurethral or condom catheter–associated bacteriuria were identified among 197 patients. Of the 164 episodes that were asymptomatic, 53 (32%) were treated with antibiotics.
