Invasive Candida infections are not uncommon in critically ill patients and are associated with a high risk for death. To assess the current epidemiology, management, and mortality of Candida infections in such patients, researchers (partially supported by industry) conducted a prospective, observational study involving 101 ICUs throughout France. In all, 271 adults with proven invasive candidiasis between October 2005 and May 2006 were included.
Among these patients, 21% were immunocompromised. Thirty-nine percent had isolated candidemia, 28% had invasive candidiasis with candidemia, and 32% had invasive candidiasis without documented candidemia.
