A novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus (S-OIV) continues to cause infection worldwide. The number of complicated cases and deaths has been higher in Mexico, where the first outbreak was identified, than in any other country. Now, researchers have compiled clinical and epidemiologic data for the first 18 patients with pneumonia and laboratory-confirmed S-OIV infection who were hospitalized at the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases in Mexico City — a facility that provides services primarily for the uninsured population in the region.
