The incidence of opportunistic infections, including Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP), has been greatly reduced among HIV-infected patients in the U.S. by the use of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) and chemoprophylaxis. Nonetheless, PCP remains an important cause of illness and death — and the most common AIDS-defining condition — in this population.
To examine the changes in AIDS-associated PCP epidemiology over time, researchers analyzed U.S. National Hospital Discharge Survey data for 1986 through 2005. Among the estimated 539 million patients discharged during this 20-year period, approximately 2.2 million had HIV/AIDS.
