Although artemisinin-based combination regimens are now recommended for uncomplicated malaria, quinine is still widely used as an alternative agent. Previous studies of quinine for uncomplicated malaria have shown varying success rates, but most have not used modern methods for determining outcomes. Now, in an open-label, randomized trial involving Ugandan children aged 6 to 59 months with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria, investigators have compared oral quinine sulfate (10 mg/kg 3 times daily for 7 days) with artemether-lumefantrine (WHO-recommended weight-based dosing, for 3 days). Of 175 children randomized, 147 completed the study.
