Because of the morbidity and mortality of pneumococcal infection among adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the CDC recommends that such individuals receive the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). However, the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of PPSV23 in this population remain uncertain. Although not currently licensed for adults, the 7-valent protein-conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (PCV7) produces a potent immune response and reduces the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease in children.
