Periorbital erythema and swelling suggests preseptal or postseptal infection, referring to the fibrous orbital septum separating superficial from intraorbital tissues. Preseptal infections rarely cause complications, but postseptal infections, such as orbital cellulitis and abscess, can lead to blindness and central nervous system sequelae. Differentiating these infections is therefore important but difficult to do by physical examination alone.
