Many people have flocked to Haiti since a major earthquake demolished its capital city, Port-au-Prince, earlier this year. A new report from the CDC suggests that these individuals are at risk for malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, which is endemic in Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic.
During the first 6 weeks after the earthquake (January 12–February 25), the CDC received reports of 11 individuals with laboratory-confirmed P. falciparum malaria that had been acquired in Haiti. Seven were emergency responders from the U.S., three were Haitian residents (including a Haitian adoptee) who had traveled to the U.S., and one was a U.S. traveler.
