From the start of the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, pregnant women were known to be at increased risk for severe infection (JW Infect Dis Aug 5 2009). To better delineate the effects of H1N1 influenza in this population, researchers analyzed data on the 788 confirmed or probable cases in pregnant women that were reported to the CDC with symptom onset from April through August 21, 2009.
In all, 509 of the women were hospitalized (including 115 who were admitted to an intensive care unit [ICU]), and 30 died.
