The 2009 H1N1 influenza virus has been shown to cause severe disease in some groups, including children and pregnant women. To characterize clinical illness and assess outcomes in sold-organ transplant recipients, investigators conducted a cohort study involving children and adults with kidney, liver, heart, lung, or other organ transplants who were receiving at least one immunosuppressive drug and who had microbiologically confirmed influenza A between April and December 2009. Patients who had acquired influenza nosocomially or while receiving antiviral prophylaxis were excluded. The final study cohort consisted of 237 patients from 26 transplant centers (25 in North America, 1 in Europe).
