Despite the licensure of a live mumps vaccine in the U.S. in 1967, a large mumps outbreak (6584 cases) occurred in 2006. This event prompted CDC investigators to evaluate the seroprevalence of antibody to mumps virus in this country and to examine demographic factors associated with the presence or absence of antibody.
Data and sera collected from 1999 through 2004 for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed.
