The IL28B gene encodes for type III interferon. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) near this gene, rs12979860, has been associated with differences in sustained virologic response (SVR) among patients receiving pegylated interferon/ribavirin therapy for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Specifically, the rs12979860 CC genotype is associated with a better outcome than either the TC or the TT genotype — at least in patients with HCV monoinfection. Researchers in Spain recently showed this association in HCV/HIV-coinfected patients (JW AIDS Clin Care May 17 2010).
