Drug-Resistant Cytomegalovirus in Transplant Recipients

In a French multicenter cohort, resistant strains were detected in 5% of CMV-infected transplant recipients — most often, in those with primary infections.

To prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) and solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, most centers use prophylactic or preemptive antiviral treatment. Although infection with drug-resistant CMV has been described in transplant recipients, the prevalence of such infections has not been investigated in detail.

Now, researchers in France have published the results of a multicenter cohort study involving 59 HSCT and 287 SOT recipients enrolled between September 2006 and December 2008 with newly diagnosed CMV infection.
